Editing Ethics and Professional Standards

Editing Ethics

I believe that the role of an editor is to be the bridge connecting the work of a writer with their intended audience in the most effective way possible while maintaining authorial voice and vision. Therefore, I strive to maintain the authenticity of every project by aligning with the writer’s language and goals.

I believe that editors have a crucial role in elevating and supporting voices that are often silenced, including those of persons of colour, 2SLGBTQIA+ persons, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, immigrants and refugees, and other equity-deserving groups. Therefore, I strive to treat each person I work with fairly and with equity, taking into account their individual needs.

I believe that editors have a responsibility to consistently grow their knowledge bases and expand their editorial skills, while simultaneously identifying and addressing their biases. Therefore, I consistently seek to expand my own knowledge and skills to increase my understanding of the world as it actually is.

Professional Standards

My professional standards as an editor are aligned with the Editors Canada Professional Editorial Standards 2024.

Personal Values

I believe in the core principles of democracy, generally including tolerance of the opinions of others. That said, given the current state of the world, it is important to be explicit: I am extremely intolerant of fascism, racism, authoritarianism, and tyranny. As a result, I will not accept any projects that support any of these positions, and I will not work with or for anyone who I know to believe that these are acceptable positions to hold.

I believe in supporting human effort and human creativity. As a result, I will not knowingly take on projects that use generative AI, LLMs, or any other technology that derives data from theft at any point in the process.
